Within the past few weeks, stores and designers have been debuting their autumn lines and one thing is very apparent: polka dots are going to be big in the upcoming season. If polka dots sound a little saccharine for your taste, don’t fret — there’s a good mixture of the traditional red and white/black and white colour combinations down to the more subtle monochromatic polka dot patterns. Our favourite pieces thus far include unexpected colour pairings and barely-there polka dot textures on classic pieces that you’ll feel like wearing even when the next big thing comes along.
J.Crew Collection Cashmere Polka Dot Sweater
If you’ve ever touched a cashmere sweater from J.Crew, you understand why these sweaters are ones you’ll want to live in during the chilly months. We’re great lovers of cashmere in general, but the fine gauge Italian cashmere from J.Crew is in a class of its own and completely worth the investment. We love the yogurt-y pink polka dots against the wine-coloured backdrop of this sweater, which also comes in other bright combinations.
Commando Polka Dot Tights
One part sweet, one part naughty, these sheer black tights are adorned with opaque polka dots,. We love the idea of pairing these tights with a colourful frock and a pair of boots. They also make a basic black dress feel more fun. While we can’t quite believe that it’s nearly time to start wearing tights again, we have to admit that we’re sort of excited about donning these when the temperatures drop.

These pointed flats are flying off the racks at Piperlime, and it’s not hard to see why. The polka dots give these shoes an infusion of personality, while the calf hair provides texture and a dignified, vintage feel. The black and white colour scheme and the shape of the shoe are classic, which means that they’ll maintain their wardrobe staple status even after polka dots have made their departure.

There are so many sweet details to this coat that we’re having a hard time containing ourselves. The proportions, the Peter Pan collar, the oversized butons, and the tulip hemline all contribute to making this one of our favourite pieces for autumn. The grey on grey action also makes the polka dot pattern subtle and subdued, which means you won’t feel like Minnie Mouse when you’re walking down the street. What you will feel is quite chic.

What’s not to love about this oh-so-feminine frock? The curved strapless neckline is paired with a fitted bodice to create a slim silhouette up top, while the layered ruffle skirt is more organic in shape, bringing to mind flower petals. And, of course, the tiny black polka dots make it a piece that you’ll have to have for every autumnal party you attend. Throw the rules out about only wearing white in the spring and summer. After all, rules are meant to be broken — especially for dresses as drool-worthy as this one!
